November 1998: An event took place that shook the foundations of the McGuff Company (McGuff) and ultimately the entire supply chain of alternative minded physicians. Steris Laboratories, the manufacturer and only source of many unique injectables, was closed by the Food and Drug Administration without prior notice to McGuff or any other medical products distributor. Virtually overnight McGuff suffered the loss of injectables like Edetate Disodium, Ascorbic Acid, Magnesium Chloride, Vitamin B-Complex100, Hydroxocobalamin and many others.
The supply chain supporting alternative physicians who used these injectables was dealt a significant blow and, in addition, the survival of McGuff and several other medical products distributors was in doubt.
For McGuff the choice was… either quit business and keep the earnings saved over the years or use the earnings and incur substantial debt to develop the infrastructure to support its customers well into the future. McGuff chose to support its customers.
McGuff chose to take the extraordinary risk of following a business plan that would, in the end, produce a world class compounding pharmacy, an FDA reviewed, cGMP compliant sterile drug manufacturing company and maintain the medical supply company. This choice was made during a time when the FDA had forced the closure of many pharmaceutical manufacturers and was altering the legal and regulatory environment of compounding pharmacy.
With diligent work and successful planning using vendors, architects, builders and equipment manufacturers, the McGuff management team and staff succeeded in building McGuff Compounding Pharmacy Services, Inc. and McGuff Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in order to supply customers with these critical injectables. This endeavor required thousands of decisions, meticulous organization and the spirit to complete this mission.
The McGuff Family of Companies is now at the end of its six year plan to assure all alternative minded physicians will have uninterrupted access to those products that are so necessary for treatment of their patients.
- The McGuff Company now has a 150 plus page product catalog highlighting the best pharmaceutical, disposable and equipment products in the industry. The product selection has increased four fold from the previous catalog reflecting McGuff’s dedication to serve as your medical products supplier.
- McGuff Compounding Pharmacy Services, Inc. has been recognized for the ability to meet the needs of both physician and patient alike. The pharmacy sets a pricing policy that is fair and has a friendly staff to greet every customer. The pharmacy has been inspected by the FDA, the State Board of Pharmacy and independent auditors to certify the pharmacy’s quality system meets the requirements of the International Standards Organization (ISO9001:2000) and the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB). The pharmacy is licensed throughout the United States and can ship to most states and all territories.
